ScamCinema in the AI Era: When Expression Becomes a Pastiche Scam

Expression without subjectivity is not homage; it is the erasure of one's existential presence.

The critic describes this film as the product of an "AI Spielbergbot," which is less a metaphor and more a precise diagnosis. In the existential war, expression is the only way to confirm identity, but David Robert Mitchell has chosen total surrender here. He no longer attempts to define his own reality; instead, he manufactures a "movie-like movie" by stitching together the symbols of others—Spielberg's atmosphere, De Palma's split-diopter shots, and 80s nostalgia.

The most ironic detail lies in the couple's setup: Greg is shamed by his failure as a breadwinner, while Denise secretly writes a novel about abandoning her family. This should have been a potent entry point for exploring private power struggles and the awakening of subjectivity. Instead, Mitchell treats it as a cheap backdrop for harmless dinosaurs. When real domestic power struggles are reduced to mere symbols of "suppressed passion," the expression becomes a weaponized narrative: using a grand, spectacular shell to mask a genuine investigation into structural violence, such as the mental attrition caused by gendered labor roles.

This "inert" expression is essentially an act of complicity. The director is complicit with commercial capital and the public's cliché of "Classic Hollywood," playing the role of a "competent director" for short-term gain at the cost of his own subjectivity. When a creator begins "going through the motions," they cease to be the one defining reality and become an object defined by others. The End of Oak Street is not a survival game for dinosaurs, but a specimen of a creator domesticated by the capitalist structure.
