When cameras are fixed to lamp-posts, public space is transformed from a site of free expression into a massive digital panopticon. The essence of this surveillance is the forceful pricing of an individual's subjectivity by power: your face no longer belongs to you; it is a faceprint to be searched, compared, and categorized.
Most cynical of all is that the algorithm's discrimination against Black people and other marginalized groups is a known fact. Here, meta-violence is codified through code. By leveraging a complicity narrative of 'fighting crime,' the authorities push the public to subconsciously accept a premise: to catch a few 'bad guys,' every citizen must be scanned by default. This essentially presets everyone as a suspect—a brutal degradation of human rights.
Talk of 'transparency' and 'legal frameworks' is merely performative concession. Once the infrastructure is physically deployed, the power of interpretation remains forever with those who hold the switch. A truly pedestrian-friendly city cannot be built on the foundation of every person being scanned like a prisoner in real-time.
