The Illusion of Nature's Return and the Complicity of Tourism

所谓的 'return of nature' is often just humans attempting to atone for plunder by consuming it.

Nature never needed human 'salvation'. The return of humpback whales to Rio is a biological rebound where Actual moves toward Potential, but it is far from a heartwarming 'gift'. The narratives in the news, wrapped in 'magic' and 'gifts', are classic Cultural Violence—beautifying the outcome to mask the centuries of Structural Violence characterized by the mass slaughter of marine life.

Most alarming is the 'combination of tourism and research'. This narrative is sophisticated: putting biologists on yachts and issuing certificates to tour operators, packaging consumption as 'citizen science'. This is essentially a form of complicity. Tour agencies gain a moral endorsement of 'sustainability', allowing them to legally transform whales into priced landscape products, while researchers become accomplices in this business model, trading data for survival space.

Once whales are defined as the 'stars of the show', they shift from independent subjects to gazed-upon objects. The so-called 'best practices' (maintaining a 100-meter distance) are merely civilized fences around predation. The real risk is not individual violations, but the Meta-narrative that 'spectatorship' equals 'love' for nature. Under this logic, more boats, more noise, and more chemical pollution are justified in the name of 'conservation'.

While the reduction of the violence gap is a biological victory, the ensuing game is capitalistic. If a species' value for survival must be proven by 'attracting tourists', it remains imprisoned within a value system defined by humans.
