From Zen to Doomscroll: The Middle-Class Survival Illusion

When survival skills are packaged as middle-class hobbies, crisis becomes the only reality.

这种从“乐趣”到“生存”的快进,本质上是 Potential(本可达到的生态稳定)与 Actual(干旱与短缺)之间差额的具象化。

The most ironic part of this piece is that the author initially defined growing vegetables as 'super-tiny-scale subsistence farming with a side of Zen.' In her cognitive entry point, land was an aesthetic symbol on TikTok, an educational tool for her child, and a consumable 'lifestyle.' This is a classic middle-class expression: transforming the fundamental logic of survival—acquiring food—into a form of recreational performance.

But the climate crisis quickly tore through this cultural camouflage. As heatwaves and droughts caused seedlings to die in bulk, this 'performance' was forced to shift toward a real existential game. The transition from seeking Zen to hunting for Kilner jars at TK Maxx, and from following lifestyle influencers to doomscrolling planting calendars, reveals a brutal structural fact: for most urban middle-class people, the structural violence between them and their food supply is invisible, until that invisibility is forcibly shattered by extreme weather.

The 'low-grade panic' the author feels is actually a fear of the loss of her own agency. She realizes that her so-called 'hobby' was actually a luxury built upon the complicity of a stable climate and global supply chains. Now, that complicity has collapsed. Her attempt to gain security through 'homesteading' is still an individual-level patch, not a resistance against structural crisis.

This fast-forward from 'fun' to 'survival' is essentially the concretization of the gap between Potential (ecological stability) and Actual (drought and shortage) in the Violence Triangle. When gardening is no longer about Zen but about not starving, the so-called 'lifestyle' becomes the most clumsy scam.
