Australians have long used mocking the English as a tool for national identity—a classic form of identity politics, attempting to regain subjectivity by deconstructing the former colonizer at a cultural level. For the most part, this 'national pastime' is a harmless cultural expression, a kind of emotional compensation in the post-colonial era.
However, as Britain faces extreme drought and temperatures hit 38°C, this narrative fails. The climate crisis is not an identity label that can be dissolved by 'humor'; it is a massive structural violence. Extreme weather strikes the baseline of human survival indiscriminately; it doesn't care about the color of your passport or whether you were the colonizer or the colonized in history.
If Australians continue to derive pleasure from mockery at such a moment, they fall into a dangerous complicity: reducing a global existential crisis to a local identity game. When the gap between Potential (a habitable Earth) and Actual (parched land and extreme heat) becomes this vast, any attempt to turn it into a 'joke' is essentially diluting the severity of the catastrophe—a form of cultural violence masking reality once again.
At this scale, there are no winners, only the Primal Race facing the risk of extinction together within the same biological wall.
