The logic here is sinister—it attempts to manufacture an illusion of emotional consensus to offset the visceral experience of structural violence.
Look at these terms: 'Hard work' is the romanticization of exploitation; 'Fair play' is blind obedience to a rigged set of rules; 'Community' is a coded attempt to shift the burden of social welfare from the state structure onto neighborly altruism. When 70% of people identify 'hard work' as a British value, no one asks who reaps the rewards and who is being drained. In a masculine-centric and stratified structure, 'hard work' often means women performing unpaid domestic labor while acting as 'diligent cogs' in the workplace just to survive.
The irony peaks when the report suggests politicians use 'affirmative' messaging rather than 'grievances.' This is essentially asking the oppressed to stop complaining and instead embrace their shackles, provided those shackles are labeled as 'noble.' When people feel a fake sense of equity while queueing, they are in fact complicit in maintaining an order that keeps them marginalized in resource distribution.
These 'shared values' aren't meant to resolve divisions, but to erase individual suffering by defining a vague 'Us.' It tells the public: as long as you are hardworking, fair, and community-minded, you are a 'good Briton,' and your despair is simply a failure to be 'positive' enough.
