Land Tax: A Power Restructuring of Wealth Anchors
The debate over LVT in the UK ostensibly concerns funding social care and defense, but it is actually targeting the foundation of the largest wealth store: residential property. The current Council Tax is a total scam, using 1991 valuations to tax current homes. This effectively protects those who captured land via structural dividends decades ago, while forcing newcomers to bear higher relative costs. This is classic structural violence: the system facilitates a one-way transfer of wealth through a temporal gap.
Most revealing is the logic of the objectors—the concern that elderly residents in expensive homes cannot afford the tax. This exposes a massive mechanism of complicity: politicians fear alienating the property-owning electorate, thus tacitly maintaining an inefficient and unjust system. Behind this "compassion" lies the legalization of land banking, which manufactures scarcity and reinforces a cultural narrative that property ownership is the only source of security, thereby stripping others of their right to housing.
If LVT is implemented, it would be a minor counter-strike against meta-violence. By increasing holding costs, it forces land to shift from a "speculative asset" back to a "productive resource," weakening the parasitic class living off ground rent. Yet, this is still insufficient. As long as real estate is viewed as an anchor for social status, any tax reform can be packaged as a "progressive" PR move, while the gap between Potential and Actual—the lack of housing as a basic human right—remains hidden behind complex tax calculations.
True victory is not swapping stamp duty for land tax, but completely dismantling the cognitive entry point that equates "property" with "identity".
