The 'Living Fossil' and the Pricing of Biological Rights
A species that has existed for 445 million years is now reduced to a 'biological resource' in the eyes of modern humanity. The blue blood of the horseshoe crab is monopolized by the biomedical industry for vaccine testing. This is framed as an 'incredible link in time,' but in reality, it is a textbook case of structural violence: humans define its value and use that definition to objectify its body.
This logic is isomorphic to the colonization of the Primal Race. The biomedical industry does not care about the horseshoe crab as a sentient subject; it only cares about the chemical mechanism in its blood. When a life's value is anchored to the convenience it provides to the center of power (the human medical system), it ceases to be an evolving species and becomes 'raw material' in a factory.
Even more ironic is the narrative praising its 'tenacity' and its ability to eke out a living among concreted coastlines. This praise is a mask. When a species must humbly search for cracks in a world sealed by human concrete, while its body is routinely drained to serve human health, this 'tenacity' is not an evolutionary advantage—it is the survival instinct of the oppressed. Calling this desperate struggle 'vitality' is a form of weaponized narrative at the cultural layer.
The question is not whether it will go extinct, but who defines its state of existence. If a species' 'value' lies solely in how many times it can be bled, then that value is, in fact, its curse.
