The 'Truth' in Documentaries and the Erased Porter
The upcoming 'Savage Mountain' on Sky Documentaries is a textbook narrative trap. Kristin Harila broke a world record, but the cost was a porter, Mohammad Hassan, allegedly left to die. The film claims it will "set the record straight"—which in reality means using the power of the lens to sanitize a tragedy into a tale of "unavoidable circumstances."
This is classic cultural violence within Galtung's Violence Triangle. The direct violence was Hassan's desperation at high altitude; the structural violence is the grotesque inequality between the white mountaineer and the indigenous porter, where the former purchases the latter's physical existence to validate her own existential win. Now, the documentary weaponises the cognitive entrance to rebrand structural exploitation as a heroic saga of "courage."
It is profoundly cynical. When the mountaineer defines the "facts," the silenced porter loses all subjectivity. He is no longer a human being, but a "controversy" to be managed. This is a dark complicity: capital, media, and privilege conspiring to reduce a marginalized life to a mere PR hurdle in a success story.
