The 'Happy Ending' Scam: A Collective Hypnosis of Subjectivity Surrender
This Guardian piece is a textbook sample of cultural violence. Readers blanket the comments with 'healing' and 'closure,' turning TV finales into spiritual painkillers. From the joy of defining family through pregnancy in *Friday Night Dinner* to the 'everyone gets what they deserve' trope in *Schitt’s Creek*, this narrative feeds the audience a dangerous scam: if you endure enough and play your assigned role in the game, the system will eventually reward you with a 'beautiful moment.'
Most ironic is that these 'happiest' endings are essentially the castration of subjectivity. Take *The Good Place*—the ultimate fulfillment is decided as 'leaving' after experiencing everything. This isn't happiness; it's a total surrender in the existential war. When one believes 'I have everything I wanted, so I can cease to exist,' their Potential has been capped at a static endpoint. A Just Expression should be the continuous breakthrough of boundaries, not a peaceful death in a pre-designed 'heaven.'
Furthermore, the praise for 'love and friendship' is a classic weaponized narrative. Whether it's gay romance or workplace reconciliation, it's framed as a victory 'without compromise.' In reality, this 'lack of compromise' only exists because the characters have fully internalized the evaluation system of the existing structure. The 'success' and 'happiness' they pursue are merely standard templates defined by meta violence. The function of such endings is to create a temporary emotional peak, tricking people into believing that their own lives will follow a similar arc if they just endure the Structural Violence of reality, thus turning them into complicit actors of the order.
Good news is when Actual moves toward Potential. These 'happy endings' do the opposite: they lock Potential into the comfort zone of the Actual and tell you that you've arrived.
