CosplayListening Tour: A Power Cosplay of the 'Chosen One'

'Listening' is the visual consumption of the populace by power, not a genuine delivery of governance.

Andy Burnham's 'listening tour' is a textbook case of the weaponisation of expression. By adopting a peripatetic posture, he attempts to construct a narrative of 'empathy with the people' in the public square. However, the essence of this expression is not communication, but a performance of identity—he is not acting as the chief executive of a modern democracy, but as a medieval monarch, or more precisely, as the 'King of the North.'

This behavior reveals a common scam in the cognitive entry points of politics: equating 'visibility' with 'efficacy.' At the structural level, facing agricultural collapse and energy spikes driven by the climate crisis, what is required is a long-term renewable transition strategy, not a few chinwags on a bus. Strategy is tedious and requires sequential thought; a roadshow is visually striking, manufacturing a cultural illusion that 'the leader cares.'

Beneath this lies a form of meta violence: a masculine-centric narrative that views leadership as an 'innate quality' rather than 'professional competence.' In this narrative, the male leader only needs to perform a paternalistic 'inspection' to achieve a spiritual connection with the ruled, while the actual details of governance are dismissed as mere 'detail.'

Burnham and his complicit marketing team are engaged in an existential game. They seek to replace the void of planning with a romanticized image of leadership. The more 'endearing' this expression appears, the more it masks a dangerous governance vacuum. When a politician relies on the aesthetics of a medieval king, he is selling a 'savior' scam to the public.
