By packaging the generational transmission of cooking as a revival of 'comfort food' and using the 'grandmother's recipe' trope, it transforms the historical confinement of women in the private sphere into a consumable aesthetic product. In this narrative, female labor is romanticized as a conscious 'heritage,' while deliberately ignoring that this transmission was historically a forced division of labor based on the biological wall and structural violence—women refined their kitchen skills only because they were barred from the public sphere.
The irony is sharpened by the role of the male critic. He travels through Edinburgh, London, and Manchester like a colonial explorer, tasting food from female-fronted bistros and converting female survival strategies into his own 'food journalism.' This is a seizure of the cognitive entry point: women create the value, but the man retains the pricing and interpretation power by defining what constitutes 'good comfort food.' The label 'female-fronted' is mere PR packaging as long as it ignores the structural violence of the gender pay gap and unpaid domestic labor.
'Comfort food' provides comfort for the diner, but for the women who repeated these tasks for generations, it was a fake optimal expression chosen out of necessity in an existential war. When a male critic defines this as a 'classic,' it is simply re-absorbed into the meta-violence of the masculine-centric narrative.
