Against Self-Censorship: Tearing Open Structural Violence with Intuition

True expression is the cessation of performance, releasing trauma from the cage of self-editing.

Sullivan Fortner’s new album, *Leave That in There*, is less about musical experimentation and more about a reclamation of expression. By using edibles and abandoning post-production tinkering, he shifts from a fake optimal expression to a true optimal expression. In the mainstream industry, endless takes and editing are forms of cultural self-editing—a demand to perform a 'perfect, approved' role, the price of which is the death of subjectivity.

The title originates from a woman's terse response during the Hurricane Katrina disaster: 'Leave that in there.' This moment is powerful because it marks an individual's decisive abandonment after facing structural violence—government failure, systemic neglect of Black communities, and the collapse of resources. When one realizes the environment is a scam with no just remedy, abandoning 'completeness' or 'decency' becomes the only survival strategy.

Fortner transforms this resolve into an artistic manifesto: no more hiding trauma, no more pruning his brokenness to fit a 'civilized' aesthetic. This unedited expression resists the narrative that seeks to 'romanticize' or 'resilience-ize' disaster. Many good news stories praise the resilience of victims, but resilience is often a cloak for structural violence—suggesting that because you are strong enough, the system doesn't need to change. By leaving the dissonant, painful, and unedited fragments in the record, Fortner attacks meta-violence: he refuses to let his existence be validated by a definition of 'excellence' imposed by others.

This return to intuition is where he finds his true optimal expression. He no longer seeks to trade a performance of the 'perfect jazz pianist' for industry points; instead, he establishes his identity by presenting a 'broken but real human.' The weaponization of this expression lies not in aggression, but in the refusal to be domesticated.
