The Pigeon Refuses to Perform: An Existential Game of Agency

True relationship is not about playing a role, but a confrontation of subjectivities.

This seemingly light essay actually reveals a miniature game of expression and power. The author longs for a "Crow Bro"—a sophisticated companion capable of providing emotional value through interaction and a certain kind of loyalty. This longing is essentially a projection of a "controllable and reciprocal" social relationship: I provide peanuts, you provide charisma and companionship. This is, in a sense, the typical masculine-centric narrative: using resource exchange to transform the other into a role that meets expectations.

But Susan the pigeon refuses to enter this script. She shuns the "homes" built by the husband, rejects the intimacy of perching on a shoulder, and ignores the performative demands of TikTok. Through an extreme, distant form of expression, she establishes her own subjectivity: she doesn't need your love; she only needs your services as an agricultural supplier, conducted on her terms and at her distance.

This is a truly Just Expression. Susan does not play the role of a "docile pet" to secure better feed; she maintains her biological wall while forming a pure economic contract with the human. In this relationship, neither party is playing a role recognized by the other, and thus there is no death of subjectivity. When the author muses that "maybe we get the bird friends we deserve," she is actually realizing her passive position in this game—she has become the servant who provides service while maintaining a "respectfully distant" stance.

Many people's pursuit of "soulmates" or "perfect pets" is often an attempt to force the other into a role within a weaponized romantic narrative. This pigeon, with its arrogance, reminds us that true respect begins with acknowledging the other's right to refuse to be defined.
