Reaching 50 is Not Success, but a Lucky Escape from Structural Homicide

When mere survival is framed as a 'success story,' it is the ultimate expression of violence.

Science did not fail my friends. Politics did.

In Latin America, the life expectancy for trans women is 35. When a 50-year-old trans woman is framed as a 'success story,' the narrative masks a brutal calculation: the majority of her peers were physically erased by HIV or transphobia long before reaching that age. This isn't success; it's a lottery of survival, a lucky escape from systematic structural homicide.

Erika’s trajectory perfectly illustrates the Violence Triangle: Direct violence is the trail of funerals and murdered friends; Structural violence is the criminalization of sex work and a healthcare system that ties resources to moral judgment; and Cultural violence is the medical narrative claiming 'you chose this life.' This cultural weaponization frames structural coercion—being forced into high-risk survival—as 'personal choice,' legitimizing the humiliation and neglect within the clinic.

The ultimate scam here is the fetishization of 'scientific progress.' As Erika rightly noted: Science did not fail my friends. Politics did. The medicine existed, but the power to distribute it remained with complicity-driven actors who viewed them as sub-human. The current funding cuts from USAID and Pepfar are simply an escalation of structural violence, signaling that these lives hold zero value on a budget sheet.

Do not be seduced by the warmth of survivor narratives. If reaching 50 is the benchmark for 'success,' the gap between Potential and Actual in the Violence Triangle remains obscene. A true good_news is not that one individual survived, but that the structure which capped a whole race's life expectancy at 35 is dismantled.
