The Poetry Boom: Reclaiming the Instinct of Expression Amidst Ruins
The Guardian discusses a "boom" in poetry, but I want to talk about the desperation of Expression. When a life is filled with tanks, bombs, and prison walls, forms of expression requiring time, logic, and structure—like prose or novels—fail. Structure itself is a mask of civilization; the essence of Violence is the destruction of that structure, turning the gap between Potential and Actual into a bloody reality.
The mention of Ukrainian poets scratching lines into prison walls or writing in trenches is essentially an Existential War. In the face of extreme direct violence, an individual's subjectivity is rapidly objectified into "casualty figures" or "refugees." At this moment, poetry is no longer a literary ornament but a biological survival instinct—confirming "I still exist" through the most compressed expression in a state of total deprivation.
Interestingly, the article groups this profound survival expression with "Instapoetry." One is a rescue mission for subjectivity amidst ruins; the other is a product of weaponized cognitive entry points, providing a low-cost illusion of "healing" for modern spiritual emptiness through cheap aphorisms. Both are called poetry, but one is a True Optimal Expression facing death, while the other is a False Optimal Expression under consumerism.
Ultimately, poetry feels vital during cataclysms because it captures the minute moments erased by meta violence—like a bag of crushed Snickers. While state machinery attempts to define war through "heroism" or "geopolitics," poetry reclaims the power of interpretation by documenting details that lack "news value." This is the true weaponization of poetry in an age of violence: it doesn't stop bullets, but it prevents the soul from being completely formatted by structural violence.
