马耳他的“电影天堂”:一场关于主体性出卖的税务 scamMalta's Movie Paradise: A Tax Scam of Subjectivity
Malta has effectively turned its entire territory into a giant, rentable "visual plugin." In Hollywood's narrative, Malta can be Rome, Sicily, the Caribbean, or any place defined as "exotic." This supposed "versatility" is actually an extreme erasure: Malta's actual geography and history are weaponized as cheap aesthetic resources to serve external cognitive entry points.
This is essentially a game of subjectivity. The Maltese government seeks a "optimal expression" in economic terms through aggressive tax incentives. But this is a fake optimal. When a nation's film industry is defined as a "service sector" rather than a "creative sector," it falls into structural violence. Hollywood retains the power of interpretation, leaving Malta with nothing but temporary wages and damaged century-old statues.
The most ironic part is the internal complicity: local crews, accustomed to Hollywood's pricing power, have become unaffordable for domestic directors. This is a textbook example of meta-violence—external hegemonic narratives not only monopolize the screen but physically stifle the possibility of local narratives by altering the economic ecosystem. Local creators become aliens in their own land because their expressions have no competitiveness against Hollywood's capital.
Malta believes it is winning an "arms race," but it is merely providing a cheaper warehouse for global cultural hegemony. When a place retains only the value of being "shot" and loses the capacity to "tell," it is downgraded from a sovereign state to a giant, soulless movie set.
