Egg Freezing is Not Freedom, but a Gamble Against the Biological Wall
AOC defines injecting herself in a dressing room as 'badass,' a narrative that is profoundly dangerous. It attempts to package a survival strategy forced by structural pressure as a victory of agency. In reality, egg freezing is not about 'taking control'; it is a desperate gamble under the dual squeeze of the Biological Wall and workplace hegemony.
For women, the decline of fertility is an immutable biological fact. Yet, the power structures of modern society—especially the political center where AOC operates—are built on a masculine-centric narrative. This structure demands 100% commitment during one's peak years, without the 'burden' of reproductive costs. To win the existential war in the public sphere, a woman is forced into a zero-sum choice between 'being a leader now' and 'being a mother later.'
Egg freezing is essentially women using capital to purchase an option to 'delay being phased out by the biological wall.' AOC's mention of saving up for the procedure highlights its class nature: only the economic elite can use medical consumption to hedge against structural violence. For the vast majority of working-class women, the choice is either rushing into a potentially complicit, male-benefiting marriage before 30, or facing the death of their subjectivity during their professional ascent.
Normalizing this 'remedy' only masks the fact that we still live in a power structure incompatible with reproduction. A true good_news would not be 'women can take shots in a green room while discussing international policy,' but the dismantling of the structure itself, so that childbirth is no longer a professional death sentence. The current narrative merely teaches women how to more efficiently perform the role of a 'woman who can work like a man,' at the cost of internalizing the medicalized control of their own bodies.
