This is a textbook case of structural violence. In Slough, Big Tech has seized the pricing power of resources by defining datacentres as "critical national infrastructure." Once an area is designated as a "simplified planning zone," it ceases to be a community of human beings and becomes a commodified resource pack serving computational power.
The cruelty of this game lies in its weaponised narrative: it masks primal predation with the facade of "progress"—AI booms and digital transformation. The insatiable demand for water and power by these facilities leads directly to the heat island effect and the stagnation of housebuilding. When 350 homes are slashed to 44 to make room for servers, it is no longer a mere planning issue; it is an existential erasure. In the power algorithm, a server processing financial transactions is assigned a higher existential value than hundreds of real people living there.
Most repulsive is the mechanism of complicity. The government endorses capital through the narrative of "good growth," while water companies "explicitly exclude" datacentres from their forecasts. This meta-violence operates by first establishing a narrative of "technological inevitability," leaving the victims to realize their plight through fragmented TikTok or Instagram posts, only to find they have already been erased from the decision-making loop.
When people debate "homes or servers," they are actually discussing who is being treated as the Primal Race—those stripped of agency, left to endure the roar of metallic leviathans, are the colonized subjects of this digital era.
