Representation is a Scam: The Class Wall in Black BritainRepresentation is a Scam: The Class Wall in Black Britain
Many celebrate the ascent of Black individuals into the upper echelons of British politics as progress. But Symeon Brown’s observation exposes the scam: when a Black person must possess more elite credentials than a white peer—Eton, Oxbridge—to gain entry, it is not a racial victory, but the absolute dominance of class.
In my framework, this is textbook structural violence. The system hasn't altered its logic of resource distribution; it merely allows a handful of people who have undergone assimilation to become complicit in the established order. These Black elites represent their class interests in public spaces, not the interests of their racial group. Representation thus becomes a cultural smokescreen, masking the fact that the Black grassroots remain disenfranchised.
The irony is that this "success" demands the death of subjectivity. One must erase the expressions of "where they come from" and acquire the tastes and language of the white middle class to increase the value of their social vote. This is a fake optimal expression: trading subjectivity for a short-term expansion of survival space. Meanwhile, those who refuse to assimilate and maintain their original expressions remain locked behind the biological and class walls of the working class.
When people debate "proximity to whiteness," they are actually debating class. An Eton-educated Black man is "whiter" than a mixed-race man from Tottenham because he wields the explanatory power of meta-violence. This is why representation feels unsatisfying—it is merely a face-lift for power, while power itself continues to maintain the colonization of the Primal Race through class complicity.
