耳机是弱者的生物墙,而强者在定义‘文明’Earphones as Biological Walls and the Arrogance of 'Humanity'

所谓的‘人性之乐’,不过是权力上位者对他人注意力的强行征收。
The 'music of humanity' is merely a euphemism for the powerful's demand for your attention.

This piece is a textbook example of a masculine-centric narrative. Stefan Stern uses a paternalistic tone to frame earphones as an escape from the world, while romanticizing the act of eavesdropping on strangers as the 'music of humanity.' In essence, this is a power struggle over attention: he believes people should 'lend their ears' to the world—or rather, to the social order he deems correct.

Within the Violence Triangle, this is cultural violence. By defining what constitutes 'real life,' the author pathologizes those who use earphones to build psychological defenses. He ignores the fact that for many structurally disadvantaged people, especially women, 'staying alert' in public spaces isn't about enjoying 'humanity'; it's a survival strategy. Here, earphones are not an escape but a constructed biological wall used to filter out intrusive, offensive, or purely dominant noise.

The irony lies in the author's complicity. He laments that people are 'dropping out,' yet grants a special exception for the audio version of his own book. This reveals his true optimal expression: he doesn't care if people connect with the world; he cares if they are receiving HIS expression. His definition of 'civilization' and 'connection' requires others to remain in a 'disturbable' state, allowing those in power to perform 'management by walking around' or intrusive small talk as a form of cognitive invasion.

Framing the passive reception of environmental noise as 'choosing real life' is a cognitive scam. Real life is the power to define one's own boundaries, not the requirement to keep one's cognitive portals wide open to every passerby in a public space.
