From forcing Indigenous children into residential schools to systemic sexual harassment of female members, the RCMP's violence triangle covers all three layers: direct violence in lethal enforcement, structural violence in colonial power distribution, and cultural violence in the facade of 'maintaining order.' The $125 million settlement for sexual harassment is not a triumph of justice, but a costly settlement of structural violence—using money to buy the silence of victims and maintain the internal stability of a masculine-centric narrative.
The most cynical part is the Carney government's maneuver. At the moment Trudeau suggested reform and a retreat from boots-on-the-ground policing, the new government chose to 'invest' in the RCMP through increased budgets and higher pay. This is not a public safety upgrade; it is a textbook case of complicity. Under pressure from the Trump administration, the Canadian government is feeding this colonial beast, attempting to fill a black hole of trust with cash. The logic is absurd: for a system that is failing specifically because of its paramilitary and colonial approach, the solution is to spend more to reinforce those very paramilitary traits?
This proves once again how meta-violence operates: as long as the monopoly over the power of interpretation remains untouched, all 'modernization' and 'transformation' are merely PR patches. As long as the red tunic defines what 'order' is, those crushed by it will remain mere collateral of that order.
