Edinburgh Fringe: Curated Diversity and the Consumption of Suffering
在 The Guardian 的叙事里,这一切都被简化为“dark, funny”, “celebration” 或 “bold new work”。
这种并置将极端的 structural violence(种族灭绝与占领)与纯粹的 hedonism(享乐主义)等价。
This 'must-see' list from the Edinburgh Fringe is a textbook sample of cultural violence. Identity politics, trans experiences, Palestinian blood, and AIDS history are displayed side-by-side like commodities on a supermarket shelf. In The Guardian's narrative, these are reduced to being 'dark, funny,' a 'celebration,' or 'bold new work.'
The most absurd game here is the juxtaposition: the 'freedom and resilience' of the Palestinian Circus is packaged as a show, right next to a 'kinky' nude hijacking of Hamlet. This equivalence between extreme structural violence (genocide and occupation) and pure hedonism is chilling. When suffering is converted into a 'must-see' cognitive entry point, it ceases to be a struggle for justice and becomes a cultural checklist for tourists.
There is a massive field of complicity here. The festival, the media, and the audience together construct an illusion: that providing a 'stage' for marginal narratives equals diversity. In reality, this act of 'giving space' is itself a form of meta violence — the power of interpretation remains with the curators and critics. They define which suffering is 'interesting' and which resistance is 'bold.'
This curated diversity is simply wrapping structural violence in colorful candy paper called 'Art.' It allows the audience to feel a fleeting sense of moral superiority before comfortably returning to the very complicity that maintains the status quo.
