Romanticizing Mutual Aid as an Anesthetic for Structural Violence

Replacing systemic critique with accidental kindness is a textbook case of cultural violence.

The play's structure is praised as an 'elegant figure of eight,' but to me, this symmetry serves to neutralize the reality of structural violence. While the play claims to explore how social pressures erode mental health, its resolution relies on the 'chance encounter' and 'mutual support' between two strangers. This is a dangerous narrative trap: it reduces a systemic issue of resource scarcity and class anxiety to a game of individual kindness.

Look at the characters. Esme is isolated in an art academy; Harris is crushed by a tyrannical head chef in a Michelin restaurant. These aren't just 'stresses'—they are manifestations of structural violence. The rigid hierarchy of fine dining and the power imbalances in art education are power fields constructed by a masculine-centric narrative. Yet, the play uses a 'lightness of touch' to frame this as a study of 'emotional fragility,' as if depression were a random biological glitch rather than a will physically rewritten by a hostile environment.

When critics celebrate the 'power of mutual support,' they are complicit in a form of cultural violence. The message is clear: you don't need to challenge the tyrannical chef or dismantle the isolating institution; you just need to wait for a stranger to cross your path. In the equation of Violence = Potential − Actual, this 'mutual aid' does nothing to close the gap. It doesn't erode any layer of violence; it merely applies a cultural anesthetic, allowing the audience to admire 'humanity' while the structures that produce depression remain untouched. A true optimal expression would be the exposure and dismantling of the oppressive mechanism, not warming each other in the abyss and calling it 'elegant.'
