Is Ancient Greek Rage the Optimal Expression for Modern Women?

Filtering modern female despair through Greek tragedy is a form of aesthetic complicity.

This play filters a modern woman's mental collapse through a white circle and a Greek chorus, transforming it into a kind of 'classical rage.' It is a clever maneuver: the structural violence Sally faces—miscarriages, political extremism, and racism—is rebranded as a mythological 'curse.'

By linking Sally to Greek heroines like Medea or Clytemnestra, the play engages in a subtle weaponisation of narrative. It suggests that the only valid expression for a woman in despair is a 'full-blooded, intense, and destructive' rage. While this looks like empowerment, it is actually a further objectification of female suffering, turning a mother's breakdown into a stylized, classical performance for public consumption.

The most ironic part is Sally's internal game: imagining a hundred reactions from her husband, Richard, none of them good. This existential war within the private sphere is reduced to a choreographed dance of repulsion on stage. The closing hint at 'healing the fractures' is a classic dose of cultural violence as a sedative—offering a warm ending without ever addressing the underlying structural oppression.

Modern women do not need the rescue of ancient rage. We need to dismantle the white circle that limits their expression, not encourage them to play the role of a cursed classical figure within it.
