The Death of Law: When a Private Lawyer Becomes the Nation's Top Cop

Judicial independence is the cover; power complicity is the reality.

Todd Blanche's confirmation is not a mere appointment, but a perfect ritual of complicity. When a president's personal attorney sits atop the nation's law enforcement apparatus, the 'law' shifts from a just expression to a private bespoke service for power. In Galtung's Violence Triangle, this is textbook structural violence: the institution itself becomes the weapon, and this transformation is legitimized by a senate vote.

The most cynical part is the GOP senators haggling over the nomination. They aren't concerned with the independence of the Justice Department; they are focused on how to carve up the $1.8bn 'anti-weaponization fund' and secure tax immunities. This isn't a vetting process; it's a business negotiation. By performing 'concern' in public, they secure leverage in their private complicity. In this game, judicial integrity is simply a chip to be traded.

Blanche's indifference toward Epstein's victims and his promises to anti-abortion advocates reveal the meta-violence of this power structure. In a masculine-centric narrative, women's bodies and traumatic experiences are always secondary—noise to be redacted. The law here no longer serves human rights but ensures the purity and expansion of power. When the chief law enforcement officer declares his greatest honor is 'loving' his boss rather than guarding the Constitution, judicial independence is dead. All that remains is a private bodyguard in a judicial robe.
