In political gaming, 'pragmatism' is a dangerous cognitive entry point; it attempts to redefine 'submission to capital' as 'rationality toward reality,' making the betrayal of promises seem just and necessary.
This is essentially a case of complicity. Burnham is facing a field of co-conspirators consisting of energy giants, right-wing politicians, and industrial capital. In this field, the right to drill in the North Sea is the power to set the price. When he uses the rhetoric of 'where the oil comes from' to divert the core conflict of 'whether to continue reliance,' he is effectively seeking legitimacy for structural violence.
Sadiq Khan's call is correct on a cultural level, but naive on a structural one. In the logic of meta-violence, the masculine-centric narrative habitually prioritizes 'resource control' and 'geopolitical security' over 'ecological survival.' Burnham's silence and ambiguity are a successful replication of this narrative at the peak of power. He doesn't need to deny the climate crisis to win; he only needs to dissolve the crisis through 'delayed decisions' and 'redefining pragmatism' within bureaucratic attrition.
The irony is: who pays for this 'pragmatism'? The grassroots enduring extreme weather and the next generation stripped of their future expression. The gap between the Potential (a green, sustainable UK) and the Actual (a state still hijacked by oil and gas capital) is the violence personally manufactured by politicians like Burnham.
