Lightweight Ghosts and Swapped Wombs

When narratives prioritize 'lightness' and 'pleasure', structural violence becomes mere background noise.

This TV guide is a textbook exercise in cultural violence. The most cynical entry is 'Ghosts Australia', which tackles colonisation with the 'lightest and wittiest of touches'. This is a weaponized narrative: by transforming the visceral trauma of colonization into a consumable comedy, it signals that the suffering of the Primal Race can be entertainment—provided the pacing is fast and the jokes are sharp enough to dilute the blood.

In contrast, Almodóvar’s 'Parallel Mothers' exposes a deeper layer of violence. The swapping of newborns and the use of the womb as a vessel for national secrets is not just a domestic drama; it is a metaphor for how the meta violence of Franco's fascism operated through bodily control. Female fertility is reduced to a pawn of the state machine, their subjectivity erased in the act of the 'swap', turning them into mere containers for lineage and secrets.

From the 'lightweight' colonial ghosts to the exchanged mothers, these narratives form a loop: one erases pain to maintain the status quo, while the other exposes pain to reveal the structure. Unfortunately, in a schedule that opens with the word 'joyous', the former is praised as 'genius' while the latter is merely a 'forceful experience'. This confirms that in a masculine-centric narrative, as long as pleasure is delivered, the weight of truth is irrelevant.
