The obituary of Jimmy Cricket reads like a hagiography of a 'good man.' A clown in tattered evening dress and a crooked hat, entirely non-aggressive and, crucially, with 'no victim.' While modern comedy strives for deconstruction, satire, and the political correctness of exposing structural violence, this 'pure' humor is framed as a rare form of warmth.
However, through the lens of the Violence Triangle, this 'victimless' expression is itself a highly efficient form of cultural violence. When a comedian declares they have no agenda and only wish to make people laugh, they are engaging in a massive complicity: they assume the current world order is beyond question and that the audience exists in a harmonious consensus. This 'purity' is essentially an absolute submission to meta violence—it does not touch power, challenge structures, or reveal the agonies silenced beyond the laughter.
An 'ambitionless' clown is the perfect lubricant for the system. By performing as a harmless object, he secures an entry ticket to mainstream television and the Royal Variety Performance. He won fame and a papal knighthood, but the price was the complete surrender of his subjectivity to the power structure that maintains the status quo.
We do not need a perfect, pure clown; we need those who dare to make the audience feel uneasy through laughter. Because a truly Just Expression is never achieved without someone feeling offended.
