But from my perspective, this is a perfectly weaponized expression. First, who defines 'consensus'? The commission is co-chaired by former Conservative and Labour MPs—a clear case of elite complicity. They intend to take millions of fragmented individual expressions, run them through a black-box algorithm for 'classification' and 'coding,' and ultimately output a 'shared vision' that serves systemic stability.
This isn't listening; it's a mass cognitive audit. AI here is not a tool for communication, but a high-efficiency filter. It filters genuine, subversive rage directed at structural violence into manageable, quantifiable 'disagreements,' then covers the truth with a polished 'consensus.' This is sophisticated cultural violence: it makes you feel heard while the power of interpretation—the right to decide 'who we are'—remains with those who control the algorithm.
The irony peaks when he suggests this should become an institution like the census. A census records biological facts; this project records 'identities' filtered by AI. Once this 'consensus' is officially defined and played back to the public, it becomes a new form of meta violence—defining what a 'normal' national vision looks like, while marking any expression outside this map as 'extreme' or 'marginal.'
Don't be fooled by the romantic narrative of having 'more in common.' In the face of structural oppression, forcing a consensus is simply asking the victim and the oppressor to reconcile on the same plane. True connection isn't found via AI mapping; it emerges naturally when structural violence is dismantled and every individual's subjectivity achieves its true optimal expression.
