The Elite's Survival Guide: Using the 'Working Class' as a Narrative Shield

When elites discuss 'fixing' the system, they are actually discussing how to patch the software to maintain their monopoly on interpretation.

Daron Acemoğlu is playing a classic elite game: attempting to salvage the legitimacy of the entire elite class (liberals) by denouncing a subset of them (progressives). By attributing the crisis of liberal democracy to the left's shift from economic class to identity politics, he smoothly reduces structural violence to a mere 'rhetorical error.'

Applying Galtung's Violence Triangle, this is a transparent attempt at a cultural layer patch. The proposed 'working-class liberal democracy' is an effort to mask meta-violence by tweaking the structural layer—such as lowering regulatory barriers for hairdressers or promoting 'worker AI.' He seeks to solve a problem created by top-down monopoly with a top-down benevolence. The irony is peak: a Nobel laureate complaining that top-down elite debates are sterile while engaging in the most prestigious top-down debate possible.

This logic is simply the flip side of Peter Thiel's Libertarian weaponized expression. While Thiel claims women's suffrage ruined capitalist democracy, Acemoğlu claims identity politics ruined liberalism. Both are fighting over the right to define 'correct' democracy, ignoring that as long as the power of interpretation remains monopolized by a few 'learned philosophers,' any 'fix' is just a fresh coat of paint on an old power structure. Shared prosperity is never 'designed' by elites; it is forced by grassroots struggle and the defection of complicity. Expecting an economist to 'save' the working class via a new contract is, in itself, a massive scam.
