Defined as 'Disgusting': The Erasure of Interpretive Power

Aesthetic prejudice is the outpost of structural violence; the power to define determines survival.

Most people react to cockroaches with instinctive loathing, but this is a classic form of cultural violence. When a species is labeled as 'vile' or 'unsightly,' it is stripped of its legitimacy as a 'living being' in public discourse. This mechanism—using the definition of 'disgust' to seize interpretive power—is perfectly isomorphic to how the patriarchy defines women as 'objects' or 'appendages': first dehumanize them through aesthetics and narratives, then justify direct violence or structural neglect.

Cristian Lucañas’s work is essentially a war of recovery over the cognitive entrance. By naming new species after Tolkien or Pokémon characters, he leverages recognized 'cultural symbols' to offset the existing 'loathing symbols.' This is a clever game of expression, using a sanctioned, playful narrative to force a non-pest seat for cockroaches in the human mind. It proves how expression can be weaponized to manufacture possibilities—when you change the name, you change the existential value of the species.

The ultimate irony is that while humans perceive cockroaches as 'indestructible,' they collectively engage in a complicity of habitat destruction and global warming that pushes them toward extinction. The narrative of 'toughness' masks their structural vulnerability. When a group—be it insects or the Primal Race—is defined as 'resilient' or 'naturally so,' that definition often serves as a perfect shield for the oppressor to alleviate guilt and justify exploitation. The label 'pest' is nothing more than a cognitive scam designed to maintain the dominance of the definer.
