Sadism and Complicity in the Name of Art

When sadism is packaged as 'artistic exploration', victims and perpetrators complete a power exchange through complicity.

Tim Pope’s memoir is a classic confession of power. He describes locking singers in flooded wardrobes and denting Neil Young’s forehead with a camera as mere "sadism" or "art." In this narrative, abuse is romanticized as "rebellion" and "bespoke tailoring," while the tortured superstars prove their artistic purity through "voluntary suffering." This is nothing more than a game of yielding subjectivity: the stars exchange physical discomfort for a "vanguard" label, and the director gains the pleasure of controlling other bodies through this complicity.

This power logic takes a dramatic turn when Pope encounters Harvey Weinstein. Facing a true predator with structural power, he finally understands the meaning of "We own you." The irony is that Pope describes this as a "brutal experience," yet views his own torture of artists as "mischievous." This double standard reveals a core truth: when you define the rules and control the lens, violence is "art"; when you become the controlled object, violence is a "scar."

From MTV’s regulation of "big-boobed babes" to the director’s "art of sadism," the essence is the objectification of humans. Whether it is the models forced into Spandex or Robert Smith trapped in a wardrobe, they are all consumables for a narrative weapon. Pope believed he achieved "defiant individualism" by rejecting MTV’s clichés, but in reality, he merely transitioned from an executor to a controller within another masculine-centric power game.
