War Bonus: The Legitimized Structural Plunder
The financial reports from BP, ExxonMobil, and Chevron are not markers of business success, but a precise ledger of how to convert geopolitical conflict into cash. When a company's profits double during a war, it is essentially a structural plunder: using Middle Eastern bloodshed as leverage and manipulating the cognitive entry of energy prices to drain the living standards of ordinary people into windfall profits. This is the quintessential Violence = Potential − Actual; the quality of life people could have had is forcibly extracted by this gap.
Trump's performance is the most ironic part. His claim that oil giants make 'too much money' is merely another weaponized narrative. This criticism is not a just expression, but a power game over 'who represents the public.' His demand to 'give it back' is usually a performative concession, aimed at buying votes with temporary retail price cuts without ever challenging the monopoly of capital over the interpretation of energy. It is a classic complicity: political power masquerades as the 'just supervisor' while remaining a core component of the war machine itself.
Meanwhile, the droughts and wildfires in Europe are translating the climate crisis into direct violence. Yet, BP's CEO continues to use neutral terms like 'global commodity pricing' to mask a parasitic relationship. To divorce corporate gain from public good and disguise this as 'market logic' is exactly how meta-violence operates: it defines what 'business logic' is, making this anti-human profit-seeking seem not only reasonable, but inevitable.
