The 'Gendered' Wallet is a Low-Level Complicity

Marketing-defined gender boundaries mask the unity of functional expression.

This Wirecutter guide attempts to perform a 'progressive' stance. It casually mentions that while one author tested styles 'marketed toward women' and another 'geared toward men,' the picks are 'for anyone who likes ’em.' This is a classic performance of concession. While it verbally deconstructs gender, the actual methodology strictly adheres to the patriarchal logic of binary classification, presupposing two opposing camps.

This classification is a residue of cultural violence. 'Women's styles' are defined by more colors, complex zippers for 'clutter,' or specific curves; 'Men's styles' are coded as minimalist, rugged, or possessing a certain 'masculine' aesthetic. This power of definition is monopolized by brands, using cognitive entry points to tell consumers that their gender determines the tools they should use. It is not just a marketing scam, but a restriction on the expression of subjectivity.

The irony peaks when they describe certain functional features as 'dad bait.' This proves that in their narrative, gender remains the primary label. The function of a wallet is to hold currency and IDs—a task with zero biological gender difference. Forcing a leather product into male/female categories is simply a way to manufacture demand by creating artificial differences in the existential war of consumption.

Just Expression would be: 'Here are 45 tools with different capacities, materials, and aesthetics; choose based on your actual needs.' Not telling users they can 'cross-shop' while keeping the cages firmly in place.
