被遮蔽的肌肉:当女性力量成为男性的“替身”Muscles in the Shadows: When Female Strength Becomes a Male Proxy
A classic scene of existential game: Devyn Dalton, a muscular woman, is praised by Matt Damon for having “the greatest arms I’ve ever seen.” Yet, within the industrial logic of Hollywood, this strength is defined as a “tool attribute”—because she is small, her muscles are used to represent the male lead's biceps. A cynical substitution of expression occurs here: female physical power is erased on screen to be converted into a male symbol, while in reality, this power requires the “validation” of a man at the apex of the masculine-centric narrative to become visible.
Dalton finds this praise “special,” which is a textbook example of internalized discipline. In the narrative of meta-violence, female strength is often labeled “unnatural” or “masculine” unless it serves a male-centric purpose. When that strength is used as a stunt double for a man, it suddenly becomes “permissible” and “celebratory.” This is not a recognition of female power, but a performance of power regarding “who defines strength.” The so-called “surprise” and “gratitude” are actually the submission of the structurally disadvantaged, handing over a token of loyalty upon receiving fragments of attention from the center of power.
The good_news is that this physical strength disrupts the cultural violence of the “thin-white-young” aesthetic, showing young girls that strength and selfhood are not mutually exclusive. However, true victory is not in being a perfect “proxy,” but in claiming the seat of a starring actor, as she hopes. Only when she ceases to be “a man’s arm” and appears as an independent subject throwing a punch on screen will this expression complete its leap from “tool” to “existence.”
