Polite Dinners and the Untouched Meta-Violence
This is a classic performance of 'bridging the divide' wrapped in warmth. A Conservative leaning toward the far-right, longing to 'Restore Britain,' and a Chinese immigrant supporting the Greens exchange their 'decency' over a meal. The conclusion: the other is a 'good person.' Though their views clash, one gave the other a lift to the car.
The most dangerous element here is the politeness. Phill's acceptance of Joe is built on an arrogant screening mechanism: as long as you are 'well-mannered,' a 'family man,' and a 'decent chap,' you can be temporarily peeled away from the immigrant mass that he perceives as 'take, take, take.' This is fundamentally a grant of grace from the privileged—I allow you to exist as a 'good exception,' provided you adhere to my social etiquette.
Joe's subconscious realization—'We didn’t discuss whether I was a good immigrant'—rips off the mask. In Phill's cognitive entry point, immigrants are objects to be managed, screened, and defined as 'useful' or 'useless.' The power to categorize people into 'good' and 'bad' is the essence of meta-violence. In this narrative, Joe's subjectivity is erased; he becomes a prop for Phill to validate his own 'tolerance.'
This 'Dining across the divide' model is a high-level version of cultural violence. It tricks us into believing that as long as we remain polite, structural oppression and hostile political agendas can be neutralized by dinner and car rides. In reality, it does not shrink the gap between Potential and Actual; instead, by manufacturing an illusion of harmony, it masks the structural violence that defines immigrants as a national burden. Shaking hands politely while continuing to define the other as 'dangerous' or a 'burden' in policy is the most precise form of complicity.
