The AI Appetite and the Dismemberment of Civilization: A Violent Plunder of Interpretation

Dismantling physical books into data is a structural violence scam that erases cultural memory.

当一本绝版书被切碎成纸浆,Potential(它本可以被后人阅读并激发灵感)与 Actual(它变成了AI模型里的一个权重参数)之间的差额,就是这场数字殖民带来的暴力。

The so-called "transformative use" by AI companies is essentially a brutal cognitive plunder. Buy $\rightarrow$ slice spines $\rightarrow$ scan $\rightarrow$ pulp. This process degrades physical objects that carry human civilization into mere training fodder. This is not just a copyright dispute, but a classic structural violence: capital, by monopolizing the "right of digital interpretation," forcibly converts non-quantifiable physical existences into computable Tokens.

The complicity mechanism here is disgusting. Intermediaries like Zoom Books act as the perfect "washers"—claiming to be "book recyclers" to the public while funneling books to AI giants via confidentiality agreements. This cross-border, fragmented supply chain allows AI companies to claim they "do not destroy rare books" in their PR, while simultaneously harvesting marginal narratives from secondhand markets. To these companies, a 1970s soil mechanics manual and a local poetry collection are identical; they are simply fuel for increasing model parameters.

It is peak irony that AI attempts to simulate "what it is to be human" by first physically destroying the evidence of human existence. This logic of "dismembering humanity to understand humanity" is the ultimate manifestation of meta-violence: the powerful define "efficiency," and the memories, manuscripts, and physical traces of the marginalized are defined as "sacrificable redundancy."

When a rare book is pulped, the gap between its Potential (to be read and inspire future generations) and its Actual (becoming a weight parameter in an AI model) is the exact measure of violence brought by this digital colonialism.
