Platforms Aren't Intermediaries; They Are Structural Shields for Violence

Defining oneself as a 'non-contractual party' is the ultimate scam to legitimize structural violence.

Booking.com and Airbnb are playing a despicable game of weaponized expression. On the acquisition end, they position themselves as 'trust centers' through algorithms and brand endorsement. But on the fulfillment end, they swiftly pivot, using their T&Cs to define themselves as a mere 'conduit'—claiming they are not a contractual party.

This is classic structural violence. By defining a 'grey area,' the platform creates a massive asymmetry at the cognitive entry point. Users buy the platform's 'exceptional' credibility, but when risks materialize, the platform forces them to deal with an irrational individual host. This structure—where power exists but responsibility is denied—is essentially the platform harvesting user security for profit while offloading all risk onto the individual.

Even more repulsive are the so-called 'compensation' schemes: offering travel credits instead of cash refunds. This is not just financial skimming; it is cultural regulation. It attempts to use a gesture of 'grace' to force the victim into a continued bond with the oppressive system. This isn't a resolution; it's a performative concession designed to mask the absolute monopoly over the power of interpretation.

In this complicity, platforms and substandard hosts reach a tacit agreement: the host provides a defective product, the platform provides traffic and masks the risk, and both use the narrative of the 'free market' to redefine consumer anxiety as a mere 'contractual dispute.'
