用“战争”叙事掩盖的结构性怠政Structural Negligence Masked by the Narrative of 'War'
This report succeeds visually in constructing a 'heroic' narrative: exhausted firefighters, trench-like firebreaks, and a masculine collective staring into the abyss. But once you shift your gaze from those 'soot-covered faces,' you see a textbook scene of structural violence. The so-called 'megafire' was not an inevitable natural disaster, but a governance crisis triggered by faulty electrical equipment and exacerbated by the failure of resource allocation.
The most absurd complicity occurs at the top. Macron declares that now is not the time to 'analyse lessons' because France is in 'full battle.' This tactic of defining administrative negligence—such as the failure to update the firefighting fleet despite warnings since 2017—as a 'war' is a clear example of weaponized expression. By using 'war' as a cognitive entry point, the rulers successfully shift the discourse from 'why were resources insufficient' to the emotional realm of 'how brave the firefighters are.' While the public weeps for heroes, who remembers the ignored warnings?
Furthermore, the backdrop of this 'war' remains a deeply masculine-centric narrative. Two hundred men and a 'handful of women' eating sausages at a sports centre, with younger members receiving a rite of passage through 'little chicken' jokes from their superiors. This fraternity-style alliance provides emotional value in the face of direct violence, yet structurally maintains an ancient order of physical and hierarchical dominance. It encourages the belief that events are 'unpredictable' rather than 'preventable.'
People forget like goldfish because this cycle of 'hero-disaster-oblivion' is itself a form of cultural violence. It conditions victims to believe that the only salvation is waiting for the next hero, rather than demanding a just system of resource distribution. The fire consumed the forests, and in the process, it incinerated the public's will to hold structural power accountable.
