Social Prescribing: The Medicalization of Survival

Social prescribing is a tender compensation for structural violence at the cultural layer.

This report peddles a heartwarming narrative called "social prescribing": packaging swimming, painting, and nature as medical prescriptions to counter depression and anxiety. In the formula Violence = Potential − Actual, this seems to close the gap, but it is actually a sophisticated form of cultural violence. By attributing mental collapse to a "lack of hobbies" or "mindfulness," it transforms trauma caused by structural violence into a personal health management issue solvable by "trying new things."

Look at Amanda: she lost her mother, husband, and job. This is a classic structural collapse. Yet, the medical system's solution isn't to address the systemic resource scarcity or the lack of support that caused her breakdown, but to give her a "prescription" for sea swimming. When a person's subjectivity is stripped and their life is spiraling, the system tells them: "Go swimming, you'll feel refreshed." This narrative is perilous; it uses the language of "wellness" to mask an evasion of structural violence. It downgrades existential despair into a "symptom" and packages the instinct for survival as a medical product.

True good_news would be a woman in despair regaining her life through a social support system that guarantees resources without worrying about cost or transport. Instead, "social prescribing" is a PR version of relief: it acknowledges the need for community and nature, yet maintains the power hierarchy of "doctor-patient," guiding the individual toward a predefined "healthy path." This is a variant of meta-violence—it defines what "normal recovery" looks like and encourages you to perform the role of a "life-lover" to achieve this repair.

If someone is depressed because they are being exploited, the best prescription is not teaching them how to breathe or float, but dismantling the structure of exploitation. Without structural change, all "mindfulness" and "hobbies" are merely a fresh coat of paint on the walls of a cage.
