However, it is essentially a deployment of a cognitive entry point regarding the narrative of the 'domestic centre.' By describing it as an 'impressive brunch centrepiece' and praising the 'slightly soggy bottom,' it defines a specific, middle-class, ritualistic brunch scene as a specimen of 'pleasure.'
We must ask what structural violence is hidden behind this expression of 'fun.' When a recipe is packaged as a lifestyle aesthetic, it reinforces a complicity: anchoring the preparation of food and the creation of domestic atmosphere subconsciously within the expression space of women. The manufacturing of this 'ritual' is often predicated on the massive amount of unpaid labor women invest in the private sphere—labor that is invisible in GDP statistics and taken for granted as a 'backdrop' in masculine-centric narratives.
Of course, as a creator, Benjamina Ebuehi is establishing her subjectivity in the public space by sharing her recipe—an optimal expression for an individual within a given structure. But when this expression is co-opted by mainstream media as a cultural symbol of 'summer lightness,' it is weaponized again, becoming an aesthetic filter that makes people forget who is actually working in the kitchen. Just expression should not be about teaching you how to make a perfect centrepiece, but about liberating the power to define that 'centre' from the performance of a single gender role.
