This is the perfect closure of Galtung's Violence Triangle. The direct layer consists of deaths by drowning and crushing; the structural layer is the profoundly unjust distribution of resources and border laws between the EU and Africa; and the cultural layer is composed of desperate souls shouting "Viva España!" while politicians in Madrid and Rome trade accusations of "negligence." As Meloni exploits this for electoral gain and the Spanish government plays word games with the definition of "national emergency," the subjectivity of these migrants is completely erased. They are no longer humans, but quantified "flows" and defined "threats."
The most cynical complicity lies in the fact that both the right-wing "invasion" narrative and the progressive "humanitarian" concern are rooted in a masculine-centric narrative. This narrative reduces the world to a game of territory, sovereignty, and security, objectifying individual suffering as a mere backdrop. Under this meta-violence, whether the result is reinforcing border fences or providing temporary shelter, the power structure remains untouched. The discourse focuses on how to "manage" migration, while ignoring the structural violence that manufactured 49,000 individuals who must gamble their lives just for a possibility of survival.
