Trump represents the quintessential masculine-centric power logic: viewing natural resources as objects to be extracted and equating national wealth with the scale of exploitation. Burnham’s "pragmatism" is effectively a pledge of allegiance to this power structure. He is searching for a fake optimal expression between his election manifesto and the pressure of capital and hegemony, attempting to use technicalities like "tiebacks" to exploit legal loopholes and complete his complicity with fossil fuel capital without formally tearing up his promises.
The most cynical part of this complicity is that this "pragmatic" dialogue occurred on the very day half of England was declared to be in drought and wildfires raged. This is where structural violence closes its loop: energy giants use the "pragmatic" narrative of cultural violence to secure drilling rights, which accelerates climate disaster (direct violence), while politicians reap short-term economic data or diplomatic favors from this complicity. In this narrative, those sacrificed are always the future generations and ecologically vulnerable populations who possess no pricing power.
These "resources" are not saviors; they are weaponized cognitive entries. When a leader feels the need to promise "opening up resources" to another leader just to be recognized as a "gentleman," this so-called pragmatism is, in essence, the death of subjectivity and a collective betrayal of global survival rights.
