The Gamble of Memory and the 'Keys' of Elitism
Aurora Orchestra
Aurora Orchestra frames 'performing from memory' as an adrenaline rush akin to skydiving, which is essentially an existential gamble. When musicians repeat fragments in fear of freezing, they are engaging in a costly expression: by stripping away the structural support of the score, they push their bodies toward potential failure. This conversion of 'terror' into 'excitement' is a classic logic of achieving an affirmation of subjectivity by manufacturing direct violence (stress).
More intriguing is the author's mention of 'giving the audience the keys to the kingdom.' This narrative is precarious. It presupposes that classical music is a closed, monopolized territory that requires 'guidance' to enter. By staging plays and introducing Freudian psychoanalysis, the orchestra plays the role of a benevolent interpreter. This is simply another form of cognitive entry control—it doesn't dismantle the elitist barrier but instead employs a power dynamic of 'I will teach you how to feel,' reintegrating the audience into a predefined aesthetic order.
As for the 'military plan' and 'flat-packing,' we see a textbook case of structural complicity. Musicians are required to memorize complex choreography and musical fragments in a brutal timeframe, with this extreme bodily discipline rebranded as 'trust.' Under the guise of pursuing a 'Just Expression' of artistic ideals, this high-pressure execution masks an internal power imbalance. The so-called 'closeness to music' comes at the cost of musicians becoming cogs in a precision plan, while the audience is granted a fraudulent sense of 'insight' through a curated distribution of interpretative power.
