The Pricing of Death and the Balance Sheets of War
This is a textbook case of complicity: governments manufacture a narrative of 'global volatility' to lay a carpet of orders for the military-industrial complex. In the financial reports of Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems, war is not a catastrophe but a 'growth opportunity'; death is not a tragedy but an upward revision of 'earnings guidance.' This is the pinnacle of meta-violence—the masculine-centric narrative defines the world as a perpetual battlefield where bodies are downgraded to consumable parts and slaughter is rebranded as 'defense' and 'security.'
The logic of this complicity is perfectly closed: State machines manufacture fear $\rightarrow$ fear transforms into budgets $\rightarrow$ budgets transform into free cash flow for defense firms $\rightarrow$ capital rewards the co-conspirators via stock surges. This structural violence is profoundly deceptive, tricking the public into believing that arming up brings safety, while it actually only increases the efficiency of killing and the greed of capital. When a CEO describes the 'transformation' of his company's autonomous propulsion, he is effectively optimizing how to erase human existence more efficiently via remote control.
Most cynically, this violence is entirely legitimized at the cultural level. Whether in NATO summit commitments or contracts exporting Typhoon jets to Turkey, these transactions are cloaked in terms like 'allies' and 'support.' This is precisely the function of cultural violence: making direct violence appear as a rational, civilized strategic deployment. Under this narrative, the world watches the rise of the FTSE 100, while ignoring the bodies torn apart by missiles.
