Deconstructing Divinity with Memes: Gen Z's Existential War in India
In India's semi-monarchic power structure, the traditional protest playbook is a heavy narrative of sacrifice and compromise. However, the intervention of Gen Z here is essentially a violent counter-attack on the 'right of interpretation.' They realized that under the influence of meta-violence, serious debate is futile because the opponent monopolizes the power to define 'rationality' and 'legitimacy.' Consequently, they abandoned the search for 'just expressions' within the opponent's rules and instead used weaponized expression—memes, AI parodies, and profane humor—to degrade PM Modi from an untouchable 'divine subject' into an 'objectified forehead' for a game of noughts and crosses.
This is a highly destructive reverse operation of cultural violence. The government attempted to maintain its narrative through traditional cognitive entries (such as TV news and selfie videos), but Gen Z simply refused to enter. They bypassed these entries entirely, using split-screen commentaries to transform serious news anchors into Funny or Die content. When the government tried to build enemy identification using stale conspiracy theories about 'Soros' or 'China,' the youth dismantled these labels with fake videos. This attitude of 'not caring about what others say' is actually them finding a true optimal expression in their existential war: since they cannot gamble for power seats, they weaken the legitimacy of the rule by stripping the opponent of their 'seriousness.'
The resignation of the education minister didn't happen because the government was convinced, but because its power was diluted to a critical point in the cognitive layer. When a regime finds that no matter how it communicates, it is merely performing a monologue for an audience that mocks the police with Lana Del Rey lyrics, the supporting walls of structural violence begin to crack. But do not be naive in celebrating. This victory is based on a momentary explosion of expression space, while the actual structural power remains firm. The appointment of a new minister immediately after the resignation shows that the system has rapidly iterated its complicity to adapt to the new narrative environment.
