Drinkflation: The Deprivation of Alcohol and the Fraud of Cognitive Entry

When capital masks cost-cutting by redefining 'quality,' consumers are stripped of their value without even knowing it.

This is a textbook evolution of shrinkflation: Drinkflation. Capital is no longer relying on the visible fraud of shrinking packaging to skim profits; instead, they are operating at the biochemical level by reducing alcohol by volume (ABV). This violence manifests at the structural layer: by exploiting the tax threshold of 3.5% set in 2023, companies precisely shift the cost burden onto consumers while silently hoarding the margins.

Even more repulsive is the weaponization at the cultural layer. Carling's claim that the 3.4% version "ranked higher for overall taste" is a vile manipulation of the cognitive entry. It attempts to disguise a product downgrade driven by cost-cutting as an optimization for flavor. This narrative logic is identical to corporations claiming they removed plastic straws "for the environment"—as long as profit maximization can be packaged as a universal value or a user experience upgrade, capital will rewrite lies as truth.

At its core, this is an existential game. The consumer believes they are purchasing the same product, but they are actually buying a castrated substitute. This tampering with "facts" erodes the consumer's subjectivity: you think you are choosing a taste, but you are passively accepting a "substandard version" priced by capital.

The so-called "value-premium price ladder" is a classic complicity trap. By introducing a more expensive 4.7% version as an anchor, the 3.4% watered-down version is framed as a "reasonable standard option." This is not just a business strategy; it is psychological manipulation, forcing consumers to subconsciously accept a state of deprivation.
