Heroism as a Cheap Shroud for Structural Violence
Potential(一个有预防机制、低碳转型的欧洲)与 Actual(一个依赖临时救援、死伤累累的现状)之间的差额,就是施加在这些底层执行者身上的暴力。
Three Greek firefighters died in the blazes, and Ursula von der Leyen promptly thanked their "courage and commitment" on social media. This standard heroism narrative is incredibly efficient; by sanctifying individual action, it transforms a structural disaster into a performance of moral emotion. In Galtung's Violence Triangle, this is classic cultural violence: using the word "heroism" to make institutional negligence look like a sublime self-sacrifice.
In reality, this is not just a climate crisis, but profound structural violence. Carbon pollution is heating Europe twice as fast as the global average, yet the European Commission's heating and cooling plan, promised for April, remains unpublished. While decision-makers in Brussels discuss "European solidarity" and "dispatching planes," frontline firefighters are using their bodies to fight a system that has spiraled out of control due to policy inertia and failed prevention. The gap between the Potential (a Europe with preventive mechanisms and decarbonization) and the Actual (a reality reliant on emergency rescue and casualties) is the violence inflicted upon these low-level executors.
The most cynical complicity here is that this "heroization" is an extension of the masculine-centric narrative. It degrades the male body into a consumable tool, granting it the hollow title of "savior" to provide spiritual compensation for death. This narrative trains the public to consume "courage" after a disaster occurs, while ignoring the critical question: why did the prevention mechanisms fail? Why is the leadership stalling? When a society replaces the correction of rules with the praise of the dead, this complicity ensures that the power structure remains untouched even amidst the flames.
