The Grammys' 'Asian Prize': A Cognitive Trap of Segregation

Replacing universal awards with 'special categories' is a sophisticated rebranding of structural violence at the cultural level.

The Grammys' new 'Best Asian Pop Performance' category is not a gesture of diversity, but a classic instance of weaponized narrative. By framing it as 'creating more opportunities,' the Recording Academy is actually performing a cognitive ringfencing. By establishing a specific track based on region and language, they subtly signal that Asian artists may have their own trophies, but they should not challenge the 'universal standard' defined by the US-centric power center.

This is a form of insidious structural violence. When a group is given a specific label (Asian Pop) and placed in a niche category, they are transformed from 'competitors' into 'exhibited objects.' This logic is isomorphic to colonialism—creating a category for 'indigenous art' to justify their exclusion from the 'mainstream' halls of fame. The so-called 'celebration of new genres' is merely a defensive compromise by the power center to maintain its monopoly on interpretation while facing an undeniable market share.

BTS's withdrawal is a precise execution of a true optimal expression. They refuse to enter a pre-designed 'Asian' cage because accepting it would mean complicity in legitimizing this segregation. They are not asking for a privileged 'Asian' seat, but for music to be valued as pure expression, priced in a just game without biological walls or regional tags. This is not just a fight over awards, but an existential war for subjectivity: I define myself; I am not a category defined by a judge in Los Angeles.
